Welcome to Taiwan! You’ve mastered the MRT, you know how to order your custom sugar and ice levels at the tea shop, and you’re feeling like a local.

Then it happens.

You walk into your kitchen at 1:00 AM, flip on the light, and look straight into the eyes of a cockroach the size of a smartphone. You freeze. It freezes. And then, the ultimate horror unfolds: It opens its wings and flies directly at your face.

Don't pack your bags just yet. Dealing with roaches here isn't a reflection of your cleaning habits; it’s a reflection of biology. Taiwan’s sub-tropical climate is paradise for these prehistoric beasts. But as a new immigrant, you don't have to live in fear. You just need to switch from a defensive strategy to an offensive tactical protocol.

Here is how we completely clear our apartments and reclaim our peace of mind.

1. The Heavy Artillery: Forget Sprays, Use Gels

If you are still chasing bugs around with a toxic can of aerosol spray, you are doing it wrong. Sprays only kill the one bug you see, while making your living room smell like a chemical plant. To destroy the whole family, you need hormonally targeted gel baits.

  • The Hack: You apply tiny, rice-sized dots of this gel inside cabinets, behind the fridge, and near baseboards. The roaches find it delicious, eat it, crawl back down into their hidden nests, and die. Because roaches are cannibalistic, their nestmates eat them and ingest the poison. Within a week, the entire colony is wiped out from the inside.

  • What to buy:

    • Siege Gel (巴斯夫施傑): A professional-grade German formula by BASF. It works using advanced growth regulators that prevent roach populations from expanding. Grab a tube via Shopee Taiwan - BASF Siege Gel.

    • Roach Elimination Gel by Cheng Hsi Chemical: Arguably the most famous roach killer in Taiwan. It’s highly effective and a favorite among local expats. Find it on their website here.

2. The Physical Blockade: Seal the Entry Points

You could have the cleanest kitchen in Taipei, but if your apartment building is older, roaches will simply walk in from the street or the sewer lines. You have to physically lock them out.

  • The Drain Shield: Taiwan bathrooms and balcony floors feature open drainage grates. Buy rubber drainage covers or stainless-steel mesh traps that allow water through but prevent bugs from crawling up from the sewer. Pick them up at any local Showba (小北百貨) hardware store or Shopee Taiwan - Floor Drain Covers.

  • The Tape Trick: Look at the gap beneath your front door or around sliding windows. Grab a roll of wide packing tape or weather-stripping foam from a hardware store to close off those structural highway routes.

3. The Natural Deterrents: Borax & Soap

If you have curious pets or small kids and want to limit high-intensity chemical traps in open spaces, look no further than standard household items.

  • The Soapy Spray: Keep a spray bottle filled with dish soap and water. Cockroaches breathe through pores in their exoskeletons. Spraying them directly with soapy water suffocates them quickly and cleanly, without leaving sticky chemical residues on your floors.

  • Borax Trails: Lightly dust Borax powder (硼砂) behind appliances or inside dark utility closets where pets can't reach. It disrupts the pests' digestive systems over time when they groom themselves.

When to Call the Pros

If you’ve done the gel baits and sealed the doors, but you’re still seeing heavy traffic every single night, you might have a structural infestation in the building's walls. It's time to call in a professional pest control service (病媒防治). Platforms like Hsinyi Living (信義居家) offer English-friendly coordination for apartment extermination packages.
