Warm welcome

What do I bring to Taiwan?

Do you have everything you need? Upon landing in Taiwan, there are several important things you will need to have prepared in advance. In addition, depending on the season in which you arrive, there are some clothing, shoes, and cosmetic items we would suggest prioritizing and some that you can buy here! Save space in your luggage while making sure you have everything you need during your initial weeks here in Taiwan.

Essential Packing List for Your Taiwan Arrival

1. Immediate Necessity: Documents and Finance

These items are non-negotiable and should be easily accessible upon landing.

  • Passport & Visa/Permit: Must be valid for six months, crucial for entry and registration.

  • Physical Copies of Key Documents: Bring 2-3 photocopies of your passport and visa/permit for housing and phone setup.

  • Proof of Arrival/Address: Hard copies of flight tickets and the address of your first residence.

  • Cash (TWD): At least $5,000 to $10,000 NTD in small bills for initial expenses before accessing an ATM or bank account.

  • Unlocked Phone & Adapter: Your phone is vital for maps and communication. Taiwan uses Type A/B plugs (110V); bring a universal adapter if needed.

2. Initial Survival & Comfort Items

Prioritize medications and items hard to find in a new language.

  • Prescription Medication: Enough for at least one month, plus a copy of the prescription or doctor's note.

  • Basic First Aid & Pain Relievers: Bring a small supply of familiar remedies, as local brands may differ significantly.

  • Your Preferred Deodorant: Specific brands can be difficult or expensive to find locally.

3. Seasonal & Specialized Items

Focus on the following based on your arrival season:

  • Light Rain Jacket/Umbrella: Sudden rain is common year-round.

  • Specialized Shoes: Good quality sandals or waterproof shoes are ideal for humidity and rain.

  • Specialized Cosmetics/Hair Care: If you have unique skin tones, hair types, or sensitive-skin needs, bring your preferred products.

  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Bring a warm jacket and socks, as indoor heating is rare, making homes feel colder than outside.

What You Can Skip

You can easily and affordably buy basic toiletries (shampoo, soap, etc.), towels, bedding, and kitchenware at local stores like Watsons or Carrefour upon arrival.
