The Tax Season Office "VIP" Protocol

For most foreigners, "Tax Season" is synonymous with dread, but in Taiwan, it is remarkably painless. Forget everything you know about scary tax audits. In Taiwan, the National Taxation Bureau (NTB) feels more like a helpful concierge service than a government agency.

The Tax Season Office VIP Protocol

Forget everything you know about scary tax filings. In Taiwan, the National Taxation Bureau (NTB) feels more like a helpful concierge service than a government agency. Trust us, we've lived all over the world and nowhere is doing taxes easier than in Taiwan! We've not left the tax office crying even once!

Note: Taxes in Taiwan are due for filing in MAY. Don't leave it to the last minute! Take it upon yourself to file your taxes before the last week of May to avoid long lines. A long line is the only stress you will feel during this process!

Which Office Do I Go To?

You must visit the branch that covers the city or district listed on your ARC.

  • Taipei Residents: Head to the massive National Taxation Bureau of Taipei near Beimen (Ximending area).

  • Outside Taipei: Look for the "National Taxation Bureau" (國稅局) in your specific district (e.g., Banqiao, Xindian, Taichung).

The "Friendly Desk" Experience

Most large offices have a dedicated counter for foreigners with English-speaking(ish) staff. You don't need to be a math whiz; they will pull up your income data (usually tied to your NHI card), apply your deductions, and tell you exactly what you owe (or what you’re getting back) in minutes.

Your Tax Day Checklist

Bring these to ensure a one-trip success:

  • ARC (Alien Resident Certificate): Mandatory for identity verification.

  • Passport: Required to verify your residency status (the 183-day rule; this makes a big difference on the percentage of tax you are liable to pay).

  • Income Statements: Any physical tax statements from your employer (though most are now digital and linked to your ARC, it doesn't hurt to bring along any paper documentation you may have).

  • Bank Passbook: Essential if you want your refund deposited directly into your account.

Voila! Finito! Fertig! Check taxes off your spring "to do" list and return to planning your summer holidays knowing your tax return will be automatically deposited into your Taiwanese bank of choice in July or August.
